Simon de Souza

simonSimon de Souza studied with the late Ifor James. He has a busy schedule as a freelance performer and a major commitment to the brass quintet Chaconne Brass, with whom he is frequently heard on radio and TV and has made four CD recordings. Their latest CD ‘Dancing in the dark’ received a 4* review and rating in The Independent. He holds the position of second horn in Southern Sinfonia and regularly undertakes chamber concerts with fellow members. As a freelance player he works with orchestras such as the CBSO and BBCNOW and in the West End.

Simon is one of Britain’s most respected teachers of the horn and has been the specialist horn tutor at Wells Cathedral School for twenty nine years and also taught at the Purcell School for ten years. In 2003 Simon took up the post of horn tutor at the Junior Royal Academy of Music and since September 2004 has also been Professor of Horn at Birmingham Conservatoire. As well as many scholarships and prizes many of his former students have gone on to achieve successful careers in the profession, several as principal players in orchestras including the CBSO, BBC Philharmonic, RPO and BBCNOW or in the West End. A vastly experienced orchestral and chamber coach, Simon undertakes seminars and master classes and also writes regularly on horn related matters.
